Literacy with ICT Update for the Interorganizational Curriculum Advisory Committee - June 2, 2009
Summary of Activity relating to Literacy with ICT at Senior Years
What happened in the 2008-2009 School Year:
1. Prior to the LwICT Winter 2009 sessions, a needs assessment was sent to all members of the LwICT Divisional Implementation Teams.
Over 80 responded to the survey, with 77% of the respondents indicating that discussing Literacy with ICT @ Senior Years was very important
or somewhat important.
2. Fifty seven percent of school divisions reported in the same survey that the conversation regarding moving LwICT into SY is already
happening in their division and that it is critical to School Divisions that MECY lead this conversation.
3. Forty four Senior Years Teachers and Administrators joined their school division's K-8 LwICT implementation teams at the 2009 Winter
Sessions. These divisional representatives were involved in a one day "Boot Camp" in which they learned about the philosophy and intent
of LwICT and were able to discuss their thoughts on what LwICT@ Senior Years might look like by reflecting on some guiding questions.

all schools need to do this and it is something that is behind the times so I am happy to be involved.
Important for today's and tomorrow's job markets.
Seeing the changes taking pace at Early and Middle years, the Dept is on the right track looking at moving the initiative into SY.
This organized effort at infusing ICT within the curriculum will be very appropriate for our future generations.
Great idea. Optimism abounds....I'm glad that grades 9-12 are being included, I felt left out before.. :)
Just like the implementation at Early Years, at the outset, time and effort is going to be required to inservice teachers and develop the ICT skills required to effectively integrate technology in their classes. Beyond that, the continuum itself dovetails nicely with the A&E push happening in many Divisions across the province.
I think that Literacy with ICT is a necessary and unavoidable concept.
4. The Literacy with ICT Advisory Committee is also recommending that the implementation of Literacy with ICT Across the Curriculum be extended
from K-8 to K-12 and include funding for implementation supports for school divisions including professional learning for teachers. The Advisory Committee also believes it is critical that MECY lead the extension of Literacy with ICT into Senior Years.
Plans for the 2009-2010 School Year:
5. The priority for the 2009-2010 school year is to engage with Senior Years administrators, through a series of regional meetings, to discuss challenges schools will face in light of adoption of Literacy with ICT Across the Curriculum.
6. Regional meetings will focus on introducing Literacy with ICT to Senior Years School Administrators and on discussions on the W5's of introducing Literacy with ICT to Senior Years teachers.
7. The second priority is to establish implemenation teams comprised of Senior Years teachers who will be integral to the process of introducing Literacy with ICT to their colleagues.
